L-methylfolate calcium, also known as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid calcium salt or (6S)-5-MTHF-Ca (CAS 151533-22-1), is a biologically active and highly absorbable form of folate (vitamin B9). It is the calcium salt of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), the most active form of folate found naturally in foods.
L-5-MTHF-Ca is considered safe as a supplement ingredient in the USA, having obtained Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has also approved its use as a folate source, with a maximum daily limit of 1 mg per adult.
Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process of L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium (L-5-MTHF-Ca) involves the synthesis of L-5-MTHF through a series of chemical reductions and crystallizations, starting from synthetic folic acid, including reduction with sodium borohydride, condensation with formaldehyde, and further reduction. The resulting L-5-MTHF is then combined with a calcium source to form the calcium salt, which improves stability and bioavailability. The product undergoes purification, drying, and strict quality control tests before being appropriately packaged to ensure purity, potency, and safety.
